President Schoonover has expressed an interest in using E-mail to reduce duplicate mailings to a household where two or more members reside in the same residence in order to reduce postage costs to the Chapter. If Chapter members are not interested in E-mail delivery or they do not have a computer, paper copies & other mailings will still be available.

The Chapter has openings for the positions of Historian, Knight Essay Chairman & Eagle Scout Chairman. These positions will be discussed more fully at the next meeting & hopefully, the positions filled.

The Chapter has lost two more members with the passing of Compatriots Frederick W. Morgan & Burton E. Schoonover. Our deepest sympathies go to the families.

Welcome to the Chapter's newest member, Compatriot Burton Schoonover. Burt is 92 years young & lives in the home where his Patriot Ancestor's son was born in 1779.

On a sad note we recently lost a very dedicated member of our Chapter, Compatriot Sereno "Cy" Tanner. Cy passed away on September 13 & was a former Chapter President who served in the SAR for over 56 years.

The 2009 Atlantic Middle States Conference was held in Rochester on August 7-8 & was Chaired by Newtown Battle Chapter President & ESSSAR President Bill Woodworth. The two day meeting was attended by more than 75 Compatriots and guests.

Attendees came from the seven states making up the two districts, plus National Officers & Candidates from California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, North Carolina & Texas. A third day was scheduled for a National Executive Committee meeting led by President General Ed Butler & a SAR Foundation Board meeting led by Bill Allerton, Foundation President.

This year's Knight Essay Contest winner was Hanna Mull, who penned the winning essay, "Valley Forge". Compatriot Fred Morgan presented Miss Mull with a check & plaque for her effort, noting that other awards will be forthcoming from the State Society.

Sadly, one of our oldest members passed away on December 18, 2007 at the age of 95. Compatriot George C. J. Halm had been a member since 1991. George's wife Marian, who predeceased him in January 2007, had been a member of the DAR and was also connected with a former CAR Society in the area for many years.

Congratulations to Compatriot Kyle Davis (State Chairman of the SAR-CAR Committee) on his receiving 1st prize for his report at the recent NY State CAR conference in Poughkeepsie, NY.

At the January Chapter meeting, new youth member Connor Logsdon was announced, who is the grandson of Compatriot Jim Riles. President Woodworth advised that any members who have sons or grandsons under the age of 18 who wish to join as youth members should contact him. There is a $30.00 fee at application, but no dues until their 18th birthday when they can become regular members. New Chapter member Compatriot Kenneth W. Hamm was introduced and presented with his Certificate of Membership and Rosette pin.

Nominations for Chapter Officers for this year were cast and accepted. The Chemung DAR has invited Chapter members to their 110th anniversary celebration event which will be held on March 15 at the Holiday Inn Riverview on West Water Street in Elmira. The cost is $16.50 per person and reservations need to be made by March 1st to Jan Rohrs, 3005 Watkins Rd.#3 Macintosh Lane, Horseheads NY 14845.

The Annual Chapter Chrismas Party was held on 17 November at the Old Country Buffet, with a group of 25-30 members & their wives attending. A good time was had by all. We collected over 8 bags of gifts & $90 in monetary donations for the Bath VA Medical Center.

The Chapter Nominating Committee has recommended that the present Chapter Officers be re-elected for another term, with other nominations & election to take place at the January meeting.

The Chapter was recently notified of the loss of one of our members, Compatriot Robert V. Anderson, who passed away in Hartford, NY. Bob was a very gifted teacher, researcher & historian. Our deepest sympathies to Bob's family.

Plans are underway to honor former Congressman Amory Houghton with one of the highest awards presented by the SAR. More details regarding this ceremony will be forthcoming.

During the last State meeting in November, the ESSAR Board of Managers voted to increase the New Member Application fees & Supplemental Application fees an additional $5.00, beginning January 1st. SAR National has also increased the cost of obtaining a Record Copy Application an additional $5.00.

Several members have taken advantage of the recent "Youth Membership" program & have placed their sons or grandsons into the SAR. This program allows a young man under the age of 18 to become a SAR Youth member for a one time cost of $30.00. He pays no dues until he requests regular membership at the age of 18. As a Youth Member, he receives a certificate, special pin and can attend all SAR functions, although he cannot vote or hold office until he becomes a regular member. Contact Pres. AT the recent ESSSAR Annual Meeting, Compatriots Samuel Pulford, Sheldon Robinson and Wayne Thurston were re-elected to the position of Managers on the ESSSAR Board of Managers.

Compatriot George Hauck was re-elected to position of ESSSAR Chaplain and Rex Fuller was re-elected to the position of our Western Region Vice President.

President Woodworth has been endorsed for the position of National Trustee, with that election taking place during the SAR National Congress in Dallas, Texas.

President Woodworth was given the "OK" to establish a CAR Society in Painted Post, NY and has been appointed as the Organizing President. The CAR is an organization for Children of the American Revolution in which the children are in charge of their meetings. They have officer positions similar to the DAR and SAR, but also have "Senior" positions as well for adult leaders.

The ages for those children wishing to become CAR members ranges from birth to age 21. Any child whose parent/grandparent was or is a DAR, SAR, or SR member can easily join with a copy of their parent's application and a birth certificate. A minimum of 6 approved applications are required to obtain the Charter and be installed as a CAR Society. The name of the society will be the "Baron Von Steuben Society".

All members are reminded to try to attend the Annual Chapter Family Picnic, which we hope to have attended by members of 2 newly chartered Chapters - The Finger Lakes Chapter, SAR and The Sgt. Christopher M. Pusateri All-Airborne Chapter.

The Airborne Chapter members are veteran paratroopers who have served their Country well. They come from all walks of life and many of the members served during times of war from World War One to the present fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. The chapter was named for one such hero from Coming, NY who lost his life at the age of 21 on February 16, 2005 in Iraq. Compatriot Dave Loveland, one of our newest SAR members was responsible for "spearheading" the establishment of this chapter.

The Annual State meeting will be in Rome, NY (Beeches Restaurant) on 13 May 2006 at 10:30AM with the business meeting beginning at 11:00AM. Lunch will be served for a cost of $17.00 per person and a choice of Chicken Cordon Bleu, Baked Haddock or Petite Prime Rib.

All meals include vegetable, salad, rolls, potato, dessert, beverage, taxes and gratuity.

Our present officers were re-elected to another term during our January Chapter Meeting.There is however, a vacancy for 1st. Vice President.

At our next meeting we will be presenting the Knight Essay awards and Compatriot Sheldon Robinson will be presenting a program about the Newtown Battle 225th Anniversary re-enactment held at the State Park which will include a DVD presentation of the event.

Since our last meeting, two more applications approved. Congratulations to William E. Moore (Patriot Ancestor: Daniel McDowell) and Arthur N.Smith (Patriot Ancestor: Johannes Christian Schmidt).

We have several applications on their way through the various steps of verification and should be receiving news regarding their status.

We have an ongoing project by several of our members that hopes to end with a ceremony for those Patriots who were the first to die at the Battle of Newtown and were buried at what is now known as the Knoll Cemetery. Compatriots Sam Putford, Sheldon Robinson, along with Silvia Smith (Town Historian), and several others have located the gravesites of Lt. Nathaniel McCauley, Cpl. Adam Hunter, and 2 Unknown Privates.

We have provided this informatipn to the Department of Veterans Affairs in hopes of their providing gravestones to mark these sites which these Patriots so deserve. I have also requested a gravestone for another Patriot, Stephen Savy, who was a Fifer from Vermont and is now buried in Riverside Cemetery. Should these stones arrive in time, we are planning a dedication ceremony around the time of the Anniversary Date of the Battle of Newtown which is 29 August. More details will follow as we receive clarification of the gravestone requests being accepted by the government.

NEWS FROM THE STATE MEETING: The new slate of Empire State Society Officers and Board Members has been chosen and will be voted on by ballot which will be sent to each member in good standing. These ballots will be sent sometime in April 2006 and will be counted at the Annual meeting on 13 May 2006.

Arrangements are being discussed to hold the State meetings at various locations throughout the State so as to make it easier for the members to attend. State meetings are open to ALL SAR members - not just the Officers and Board Members. The Annual meeting will be held in Rome, NY on 13 May 2006 and hosted by Newtown Battle Chapter. There will be an announcement in the upcoming "Empire Patriot" or you can contact me for more information. There will also be scheduled meetings in September, November, and March which are hosted by various Chapters.

Our Annual Chapter Family Picnic is scheduled to be held at the Battlefield State Park again this year, 26 August 2006 and there will be a "Picnic Poster" with our July meeting notice. The new Finger Lakes Chapter will be joining us this year.

ESSSAR Western Region Vice President Rex Fuller is making plans to hold a Western Regional Meeting near or in Salamanca, NY which includes a luncheon buffet at the new Casino. More details regarding this meeting will be coming. The ESSSAR Western region consists of the following Chapters; Buffalo, Chautauqua, Finger Lakes, Newtown Battle, and Rochester. Other Chapter members are always welcome to attend.

There will also be nominations taken from the floor during this meeting and the final Slate will be elected and installed at this time. For those of you who aren't aware of this cookbook it's a loose-leaf binder type book with over 900 recipes that-havebeen acquired from SAR and DAR members as well as their spouses. There are also recipes from 4 U. S. Presidents.

Some of our members have had some health problems, so keep them in your thoughts and prayers as well as those members living in the "hurricane corridors" down South.


Meeting was called to order by President Bill Woodworth at 12:30PM and Invocation was given by the Chaplain. The Secretary's Minutes from the previous meeting were mailed to each member. Being no errors or additions, Compatriot Fred Morgan motioned to accept the minutes as presented -

Treasurer Sam Pulford gave the Treasurer's report - Registrar Woodworth gave this report and stated there had been 29 new applications submitted to the State registrar at this time. Several new applications have been submitted from Newtown Battle Chapter and there are other prospective members working on their paperwork.

Knight Essay Chairman Fred Morgan reported that the contest rules need to be given to the students earlier and his committee has been contacting the local schools as well as home school advisors. The contest is open to 10th graders this year in addition to the Juniors and Seniors. Top prizes this year are National - $3000. 00; State - $300.00; and Chapter - $100.00. Chairman Morgan has contacted several newspapers, television stations, and the Community Bulletin Board with this information.

Board of Managers Chairman Sheldon Robinson discussed a donation to Chemung Valley Living History; the upcoming Chapter Christmas Party; and Vice President Jim Riles resignation due to health problems. Chairman Robinson motioned that a donation of $250.00 be given to the CVLH.

President Woodworth reported that the ESSSAR (State Society) voted to increase the State Dues $3.00. This will be a State By-laws change so a final vote by the State Membership will be needed to make this final. This will take place with the ballots mailed in April 2006. The next ESSSAR Board of Managers meeting will be held in Coxsackie, NY on 05 Nov 2005.

While attending the SAR Congress in July 2005, President Woodworth spoke with the Genealogist General regarding the current Supplemental Application Fees and recommended a "discount" for members submitting more that one supplemental application at the same time. The National Trustees voted and passed by a 83% margin to change the By-laws and ease the requirements for a son, grandson, nephew, etc who have an approved SAR Member. This would make it possible for the above noted person to become a member with a photocopy of their birth certificate and their father's, grandfather's, etc. SAR application copy.

John Jelliff, Jr. - our Chapter Member from The Netherlands attended our meeting today. President Woodworth appointed a Nominating Committee comprising of Compatriots Dick Cowles, Whiting Lightfoot, Bob Canfield, Fred Morgan, and Sheldon Robinson. They will select our Slate of Officers for the coming year.

President Woodworth spoke of a CAR (Children of the American Revolution Society) project in which a American Flag Lapel Pin which contain the words, "One Nation Under God" is being offered for a donation of $5.00. The proceeds will be used to purchase a commercial flag and flag pole for the Children's Museum in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Compatriot Dick Cowles presented a program about the SRAC - Susquehanna River Archeological Center - of Native American studies. A future program will take place on 22 Oct 2005 - 9Am to 5.-30PM at the Patterson Auditorium on Sayre Guthrie Campus.
